Why is my boiler kettling or banging?
Kettling is the rumbling, boiling-kettle sound made when water overheats in restricted parts of the heat exchanger. Metro Vancouver's water is soft, so limescale is rarely the cause here; the usual culprit is magnetite sludge, a black iron oxide from slow corrosion in older steel and cast iron systems.
